Your Child Will Study in North Macedonia: What Parents Need to Know

The decision to study abroad is usually made by the family rather than the student, and the family pays for it. We built this guide from the questions we are asked most often. The figures are indicative and change over time; we confirm current amounts together in our conversation.
Monthly cost of living

Dormitory or private housing?
We compared both options against the same criteria. The right answer depends on the student's age and habits.

Checklist
Steps not to be missed, from before departure to the end of the first month.
Before arrival (in Türkiye)
- Check that the passport is valid for at least one more year.
- Prepare the criminal record, diploma and, if needed, parental consent with apostille and sworn translation.
- Obtain the original and a digital copy of the university acceptance/enrollment letter.
- Arrange an internationally usable bank card plus a backup card.
- Prepare a sufficient supply of regular medication together with prescriptions.
- Finalize the housing shortlist with us; decide on budget and city.
First week (in North Macedonia)
- Airport pickup and transfer to the accommodation.
- Viewings, meeting the landlord, and the lease explained in Turkish.
- Deposit, monthly payment date and termination terms clarified in writing.
- Transfer or setup of electricity, water and internet subscriptions.
- Getting a local phone line and testing the communication channel with the family.
- Showing the student the shops, pharmacy, hospital and route to campus in person.
First month
- Completing the document file for the student residence permit and following up the application.
- Completing address registration.
- Opening a local bank account.
- Activating the health insurance policy.
- Getting a public transport card.
- A consolidated update to the family on the settlement status at the end of the first month.

Who will my child call when they need help?+
At the start of the settlement process we assign both the student and the family a contact person based in North Macedonia. For issues involving housing, health, official procedures or daily life, this person is reachable by phone and steps in on the ground when needed. This is not a remote call-centre service; it is a team physically present in the city.
Is North Macedonia safe for a student?+
Skopje and Gostivar are calm cities by European standards, and both have an established Turkish and Turkish-speaking community, which greatly reduces the language barrier from day one. This is not a guarantee, however: as in any city, the choice of neighbourhood matters. When recommending housing we weigh criteria such as proximity to campus, well-lit streets and access to public transport.
How do I send money to my child?+
In the first months an internationally usable Turkish bank card covers most needs. Once the student is settled we open a local bank account; running rent and utility payments through it makes tracking easier and avoids card fees. We accompany the student when the account is opened.
Who will read the lease? We don't speak Macedonian.+
We read it and explain it in Turkish. We go through the deposit refund clause, rent-increase clause, early-termination terms and whether utilities are included, one by one. No lease is signed before the student and the family understand these clauses.
Will I know if my child stops attending classes?+
Academic attendance and grades are handled through the university's student system, and access rights belong to the student; we cannot track attendance on the university's behalf. What we do is stay in regular contact with the student and inform the family when we see a problem on the settlement side (a change of housing, health, difficulty adapting).
What do we pay you for this service?+
We charge the student or the family no commission for the housing search; we provide it through the real-estate network we work with. The only housing amounts payable are the rent and deposit due to the landlord, shared in writing before any lease is signed. The scope of items such as airport pickup, residence-permit follow-up and support throughout the term is defined clearly in our first conversation.
