Serbia Country Guide: Geography, Capital and Population
An overview of Serbia, the central country of the Balkans: its location, capital Belgrade, population, language and daily life.
Geography and location
Serbia is a landlocked country at the very center of the Balkans. With an area of about 88,000 km², it is one of the region's largest countries and borders many: Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia.
Vojvodina in the north consists of broad, fertile plains, while the terrain becomes mountainous toward the south. The Danube and Sava rivers, among Europe's major waterways, feed the country, and the capital Belgrade was founded where these two rivers meet.
Capital and cities
The capital Belgrade is the country's largest city and a vibrant hub of culture, business and social life. Known for its historic Kalemegdan fortress and riverside life, it is one of the region's liveliest metropolises.
Novi Sad in the north stands out for its culture and festivals. Niš and Kragujevac are other important industrial and university cities.
Population, language and daily life
Serbia has a population of about 6.6 million, a large share of which is concentrated around Belgrade and Vojvodina. The official language is Serbian; the country traditionally uses the Cyrillic alphabet, though the Latin alphabet is also common. The currency is the Serbian dinar (RSD).
With a rich coffee culture, lively social life and a growing startup ecosystem, Serbia offers a dynamic environment for international entrepreneurs. At Veranova Balkans we share this general picture with you as you plan your goals.
