Residence Permit in Kosovo: Through a Company or Work Permit

Temporary residence in Kosovo can be requested on grounds such as working as a partner/manager in your own company, employment with a Kosovo-based company, or self-employment. Company formation alone does not grant residence — it must be grounded in an actual working/managerial role within that company or a valid employment contract.

Work permits in Kosovo come in several types: a standard permit tied to a specific employer, occupation and region, typically valid for one year; a broader permit covering the whole country and all activities, granted to those who have worked under the standard permit for at least three years; and a regionally limited self-employment permit for company owners/managers and the self-employed. Durations and scope vary by permit type.

Choosing the right permit type directly affects the later steps of the process. We determine the suitable permit type together depending on whether you will proceed as a company partner/manager or through employment.

Generally a valid passport, biometric photo, criminal record certificate, a valid address (accommodation) in Kosovo and health insurance are required. If proceeding through a company, registration documents, tax status and activity licenses are added; if proceeding through employment, the employment contract and the employer's corporate documents are added. Translation into Albanian/Serbian and certification of documents may be needed.

Work permit and temporary residence applications are filed separately with the competent authorities, and the process can take from several weeks to a few months; complete documentation directly affects the timeline. Temporary residence is generally granted for one year and can be renewed annually as long as the conditions (company activity or employment contract) are maintained. After five consecutive years of temporary residence, an application for permanent residence may be considered; this period can be reduced to three years in case of marriage to a Kosovo citizen or permanent resident.
