Kosovo Citizenship: Paths and Conditions

Kosovo citizenship is generally reached through three paths: application after five consecutive years of legal residence (the ordinary path), a shortened process through marriage to a Kosovo citizen, and a descent-based path tied to Kosovo origin. Each path has its own timeline, documents and assessment criteria.

Which path suits you depends on your residence history in Kosovo, family situation and, if applicable, your origin. The first step is to clarify your situation and determine the most suitable path together.

In the ordinary naturalization path, at least five consecutive years of legal residence in Kosovo are required before applying, during which total time spent abroad generally may not exceed a set limit (typically ten months). This condition is an attainable goal for those who maintain their residence step by step on grounds such as company activity or employment.

In addition to the residence period, basic knowledge of an official language (Albanian or Serbian), sufficient means of support, a clean criminal record and integration into Kosovo society are expected. Planning the residence process correctly from the start makes the citizenship application easier at the end of five years.

The process can be shortened for those married to a Kosovo citizen: the marriage must have lasted a certain period (typically three years) and one year of continuous legal residence in Kosovo after the marriage is required. The genuineness of the marriage is assessed through interviews and documents; suspicion of a marriage of convenience affects the process negatively.

For applications based on Kosovo origin (descent), proof of origin through a parent or grandparent and related official records are required; this path may alter the residence requirement. We assess together which shortcut fits your situation.

Generally a valid ID/passport, residence records, criminal record status, proof of income/means and path-specific documents (marriage certificate, origin records, etc.) are required. Translation into Albanian/Serbian and certification of documents may be needed; applications are generally concluded within six to twelve months.
